Dak Prescott is living rent-free in the head of a Cowboys rival

Dak Prescott is the biggest victim of plays for the Dallas Cowboys syndrome. It feels like most of the hate he receives is incredibly unwarranted, and is mostly result of the star on his helmet. And at this point, he lives rent-free in the heads of virtually every fanbase that harbors dislike for the Cowboys.

Prescott has his fair share of adversaries within the NFC East. The battle of wills between Prescott and Jalen Hurts has defined the division across the last half-decade, and Giants fans only hate him because they're upset that they've been Dallas' little brother ever since Dak was drafted in 2016.

But the most interesting case of "rent-free" syndrome comes from the Washington Commanders. Because the Commanders have former Cowboys' defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as their head coach, he knows the 32-year-old's tendencies pretty well, and he's stolen a few of them in minicamp.

The Commanders have stolen Cowboys QB Dak Prescott's former "Here we go" cadence

A few years ago, Prescott's "here we go" cadence went viral, but he stopped doing the cadence last season after Brian Schottenheimer replaced Mike McCarthy as head coach. To be honest, it wasn't very missed because it was pretty annoying, but seeing the Commanders completely rip off one of his unique cadences is pretty pathetic all things considered.

During Washington's pass-rush drills during mandatory minicamp, video surfaced showing the Commanders using Prescott's former "Here we go" cadence. It's one thing to follow Dallas' lead, given they also haven't won anything since the 90s, but having to continue playing copycat just isn't cool.

It's an incredibly miniscule detail, but one that almost certainly has to come from Quinn. He spent three seasons as the Cowboys' defensive coordinator and has spent the last two (soon to be three) seasons as the Commanders' coach, but some believe he could be on the hot seat after last year.

After leading them to a 12-5 record and the NFC Championship in his first season in our nation's capital, the 55-year-old led the Commanders to a record reversal in 2025. Because Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels got injured, their record slipped to 5-12.

Weird is the only way to describe the Commanders using Prescott's cadence to pace their pass rush drills. Rivalries bring out some unusual behavior, but this still feels particularly odd.

Maybe imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.
