The Dallas Cowboys have one of the better rosters in the league, but with several players injured and holding in (Micah Parsons), we just haven’t been able to see that yet. The hope is that the roster will get better and healthier as the season progresses, and that seems realistic considering who they should be getting back relatively soon.
Trevon Diggs has missed all of training camp with a knee injury that he suffered late last year and his timeline has been a bit of an unknown. Diggs has been on the practice field rehabbing, but there have been no updates about when the former All-Pro cornerback will return to the field.
The Cowboys placed Diggs on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) to open camp and if he remains on that list to start the season, he will miss (at least) the first four games of the year. However, Diggs believes he could be back sooner than that.
Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs is aiming to be back earlier than expected
In episode five of his YouTube series titled “The Comeback”, Diggs said that he believes he will be able to play as soon as Week 2 or Week 3 for the Cowboys.
That is fantastic news, as the Cowboys desperately need him to return to the field to round out their secondary. They’ve been trying to piece together the cornerback room during his absence and him returning in September would give the entire defense a big boost.
However, it’s worth mentioning that players are always overly optimistic about when they might be able to return to the field, and the fact that Diggs still hasn’t practiced means it’s going to take him some time to get in “football shape.” It’s possible that Diggs is cleared to play in Week 2 or 3, but the Cowboys keep him on the PUP list for roster construction reasons and give him more time to rehab before he sees the field.
But whether he returns in Week 3 or Week 5, the good news is that Diggs isn’t that far from a return. If he can get back to the level we saw him play at during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, the Cowboys could have one of the league’s best secondaries and defenses overall. That’s how much Diggs could potentially move the needle for this defense.
When the injury was announced, there were some concerns that he might not return until Thanksgiving or later. But the fact that we are now talking about a potential September return for Diggs is fantastic news for him and the Cowboys.
