The Dallas Cowboys' selectively aggressive offseason, as coined by Stephen Jones, has been put on hold after a reasonably impressive start.

It seems that Dallas' focus is fixated exclusively on the NFL Draft, which is now less than one month away. Experts are split on what the Cowboys will do with the No. 12 overall pick, but Dak Prescott is still without a backup as we embark on the third week of free agency.

With a Micah Parsons extension looming, and Tyler Smith and Daron Bland also up for new deals, the front office clearly doesn't want to spend more money on a backup than it needs to. With that in mind, having a draft pick on a rookie contract seems to be the likely endgame.

While Ian Rapoport hinted the team could draft a quarterback as high as the first or second round, day three is the more realistic range. Reports from local insiders have suggested as much.

It's important to take pre-draft smoke with a grain of salt, but as we inch closer to April 24, Dallas' QB target is becoming clearer by the day.

Cowboys' Quinn Ewers interest ramps up before 2025 NFL Draft

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has a visit lined up with the Cowboys after he works out at the Longhorns' pro day on Tuesday, per Albert Breer of SI.com.

"The plan is for him [Ewers] to meet with the Jets and Las Vegas Raiders today and have dinner with the New Orleans Saints brass tonight, with all three teams expected to send big crews to Austin," Breer writes. "He’s already has 30 visits set up with the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts and Raiders for early April."

As a local prospect, Ewers qualifies for a Dallas Day visit, meaning he will not count as one of the Cowboys' 30 pre-draft visits. That's an important distinction, but it does not change the significance of Breer's report.

Regarded as a potential first-round pick going into the year, Ewers' stock took a big hit amidst a rollercoaster final season in Austin. While he led the SEC with 32 touchdown passes, he also paced the conference with 12 interceptions.

Despite Ewers' arm strength ranking in the 50th percentile, he forces throws when faced with pressure. His mechanics are inconsistent, which leads to a lot of inaccurate passes. He's a project in that regard, making him an ideal target on day three, likely round five.

Ewers will need multiple years of development, and that should align perfectly with the duration of Prescott's extension.

That isn't to say Ewers will be ready to start if Dallas was to move on from Prescott. He projects as a backup as a pro who could start in the right system down the line, but the former Longhorn will be just 26 years old going into his fifth NFL season.

We know Jerry Jones loves his Texas connections and Ewers would be just the second Longhorn drafted by Dallas since 2018.

You can't guarantee anything in the NFL, especially with the draft. The Ewers buzz could end up amounting to nothing, but he should be on Cowboys fans' radar as a potential Prescott backup next season.
