The Dallas Cowboys and rest of the NFL should be bracing for a massive season from Dak Prescott in 2025. In yet another wild offseason, the Cowboys again seek to get back in the playoffs and re-establish themselves as a top team in the NFC.
They did have a nice run recently under former head coach Mike McCarthy, but the team struggled in 2024 and had Dak Prescott go down with a season-ending hamstring injury. Well, with Brian Schottenheimer running the show and some interesting offseason additions, the Cowboys might have the biggest variance of any team in the league this year.
Prescott is set to return from his hamstring injury, and when you look at his past, there is reason to believe that 2025 could be one of his most productive seasons, and this is an interesting trend that has followed Prescott across his NFL career.
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott plays very well when coming off of an injury or a 'down' season
This is a weird, but perhaps great trend that Prescott has experienced during his NFL career. After a 2017 season where he regressed as a passer following a breakout rookie season in 2016, he improved quite a bit in 2018. In 2017, Prescott's completion percentage, yards, touchdowns, interceptions, and passer rating all went in the wrong direction from his rookie season.
However, in 2017, his completion percentage, yards, interceptions, and passer rating all improved. The next piece of evidence we have was Prescott going down with a season-ending injury back in 2020. He played just five games that year, and Dallas went 2-3 in those games.
However, in 2021, Prescott went 11-5 in 16 starts and threw for 37 touchdowns, a franchise record, and just 10 interceptions for a stellar 104.2 passer rating. It was one of the best QB seasons in Dallas Cowboys history.
But then in 2022, Prescott regressed. He led the NFL with 15 interceptions and threw just 23 touchdowns in 12 games. His passer rating fell to a mediocre 91.1, which ranked 15th at the position. But, as you can guess, he played much better in 2023. Dak Prescott led the NFL in 2023 with 36 touchdowns, threw just nine interceptions, and again saw his passer rating jump above 100.
You can see the point, here...
With Dak Prescott having played a bit poorly and going down with a season-ending injury in 2024, you have to wonder if the 2025 NFL season is poised to be another great year for the veteran QB. This is a very obvious and kind of odd back-and-forth trend that has followed him during his NFL career, which is already set to enter 10 years.
Prescott is a good quarterback - he's very good sometimes, but one thing we can all agree on is that he does have some efficient seasons where he's among the best passers in the league. The 2025 season could be another one of those for the veteran quarterback.
