Cowboys' Dak Prescott has just one person to blame for wasted heroic performance

The Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers played one of the most unhinged games of football that you will ever see on Sunday night. If that doesn't end up as the game of the year in the NFL, it's because it ended in a 40-40 tie.

Dak Prescott played one of the best games of his career in the most unlikely of environments, and the Cowboys neutralized Micah Parsons in his return to AT&T Stadium. It was the type of performance that deserved a win, but it didn't come to pass because of Matt Eberflus and the Dallas defense.

For someone who consistently gets raked over the coals by the mainstream media simply because he carries the weight of the star on his helmet, Prescott played out of his mind without one of the game's best receivers against the consensus best defense in football for the first month of the season.

Cowboys' defense blew an all-time Dak Prescott performance against the Packers

Scoring 30 points should've been enough to win, but Prescott said, "watch this," and led a four-play 58-yard drive trailing 34-30 with 43 seconds left in regulation to take a 37-34 lead. To the surprise of absolutely nobody inside AT&T Stadium, the Packers marched right back down the field to kick a field goal as time expired to send the game to overtime.

The Cowboys' defense let Prescott down repeatedly in this one. In most cases, it would be unfair to expect Prescott to play at an MVP level every week. But the 32-year-old is playing arguably the best ball of his career. How could you have any other argument after he did this:

Jalen Tolbert obviously deserves tremendous credit. Much like the game, you might not see a better catch for the rest of the season. But how about Prescott evading the pressure and launching the ball 40 yards on a dime while technically running backwards and taking a hit? That's MVP stuff, and the Cowboys only had a tie to show for it.

If we told you before Sunday that the Cowboys came up short against the Packers, odds are you would've nodded in agreement. Nobody expected the Cowboys to keep it close, let alone be in a position to win. They were touchdown underdogs at home for a reason. Perhaps next time Vegas will consider that Dallas has one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

If you need a reason to feel hopeful as Dallas owns a 1-2-2 record after four games, look no further than No. 4. The defense might be a disaster all season even when DeMarvion Overshown returns because Eberflus is too stubborn to change things up, but Prescott will keep this time relevant for as long as he can.
