Cowboys catch big break as Giants starter suffers devastating injury

The Giants continue to deal with injury issues, as Roy Robertson-Harris has been lost for the 2026 season due a torn Achilles.

As the world recently found out, the Dallas Cowboys will kick off their 2026 regular season on the road against the New York Giants in prime time on Sunday Night Football.

HIstory is certainly on the side of America's Team here, as the Cowboys have won 11 of the 12 all-time games they've played against the Giants in Week 1 over the years and have also taken nine of the last 10 regular-season contests against their longtime rivals, the lone exception being last season's meaningless matchup in Week 18.

Now, on paper, the Giants should be better than the team that's won just seven combined games over the last two years, and a big reason for that, of course, is that they were lucky enough to land legendary head coach John Harbaugh after he was fired by the Baltimore Ravens. But even beyond that, the New York roster has undoubtedly improved this offseason.

That said, however, on top of the news that star wideout Malik Nabers may not be ready to go come Week 1, as he continues to recover from a torn ACL, Big Blue was hit with more injury issues, as it's been officially confirmed that veteran defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris suffered a torn Achilles tendon during OTAs on Thursday, making him the second Giants player to do so just this month, as rookie cornerback Thaddeus Dixon suffered the same injury last week.

Roy Robertson-Harris started all 17 games for the Giants in 2025

Now, while Robertson-Harris has never been a superstar, the fact that he's been in the league for a decade now after going undrafted out of UTEP in 2016 obviously proves he's got what it takes to be a solid presence in the league, which is why the Giants signed him to a two-year deal last offseason.

And that's also why he started all 17 games for New York in 2025 and took 56 percent of the team's defensive snaps, the second-most among his fellow defensive linemen behind only Dexter Lawrence.

Lawrence, of course, was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals last month, and one would assume that the Giants were relying on Robertson-Harris to pick up some of the slack left by his now-former teammate's absence.

Now, however, the Giants will need to hope that new acquisitions DJ Reader and Shelby Harris can step up and that youngsters Darius Alexander, a third-round pick in 2025, and sixth-round rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis can contribute meaningful minutes when called upon.

Again, Robertson-Harris has never been the best player on the field, but the 6-foot-7, 300-pounder takes up a lot of space in the trenches, and the Giants were clearly banking on him being there while this new group of D-linemen gets acclimated. But that obviously won't be the case, and the Cowboys will naturally attempt to become the first team to take advantage.
