Cowboys cant even tank properly after Commanders' miracle ruined by missed XP
By Jerry Trotta
What did we just watch?! What started as an absolute slopfest between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders quickly morphed into a game-of-the-year contender, as the Cowboys snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, 36-24.
It looked like Cooper Rush's touchdown Luke Schoonmaker with five minutes left in regulation to make the score 209 was the knockout blow for the Cowboys. Little did everyone watching know that it marked the beginning of the craziest end to a game they will probably ever see.
Before you could even blink, the Cowboys blew the lead. Faced with zero timeouts and needing a touchdown to tie the game, Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin connected for an 86-yard score with 21 seconds left in the game on the very first play
Dan Quinn opted to kick the extra point to stamp a miraculous comeback, but the football gods were on Dallas' side as Austin Seibert missed the kick
Cowboys steal victory in Washington after Commanders miracle was ruined by a missed extra-point
A fitting end to one of the ugliest games of football you will ever watch.
The Schoonmaker touchdown feels like it happened a year ago. The Commanders responded with a nine-play 69-yard touchdown drive in under three minutes to pull within a field goal. How did Dallas respond? In the form of a 99-yard kickoff return by KaVontae Turpin, who allowed the ball to bounce between his legs before taking off from the one-yard line.
Dan Quinn opted to save clock on the ensuing drive and kicked a 51-yard field goal to draw within a touchdown, 27-20. The Cowboys then failed to get a first down, but forced Washington to use its remaining timeouts and punted the ball away with exactly 40 seconds left in regulation.
That's when Daniels to McLaurin happened. If McLaurin was simply tackled in bounds, the game would have been over. It was a complete breakdown on Dallas' defense, which was awesome all afternoon.
It is almost fitting that Washington's special teams blew the game. It has cost them multiple wins on the season. Ironically it was a perfect snap and hold. Austin Seibert simply choked.
As if the game needed more drama, Junayeh Thomas returned the ensuing onside kick for a touchdown when he should have simply went down to end the game. That allowed Washington the opportunity to heave a Hail Marry but Daniels' pass felt short of the end zone.
If you are still catching your breath, get in line. A total of 19 points were scored over the first three quarters. A whopping 41 points were scored in the final quarter, including 38 in the final 5:16 of regulation if you count Schoonmaker's touchdown, and 33 in the final three minutes.
This game had no business being that dramatic, but that is simply the beauty of the NFL. Arguably the sloppiest game of the season morphed into an all-time thriller.
