This Dallas Cowboys season will go down in infamy, but don't count out Jerry Jones from adding another layer of madness and misery over the final seven weeks.
That might be a guarantee after a wild rumor - albeit from a non-legitimate source - suggested the Cowboys are interested in signing longtime Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who was released on Friday after he was benched and subsequently demoted to fourth on the depth chart.
The Giants even had Jones playing safety on the scout team at practice. He requested his release and is now free to sign with any team.
If there was ever a team that would sign Jones immediately after his release, it would be the Cowboys. Not only does it scream of a Jerry Jones move, but Dallas has gotten awful play from backup Cooper Rush since Dak Prescott got injured.
It actually looked as though the Cowboys signed Jones behind the scenes. A screen grab of Jones pictured on the team website hinted that he is already on the roster. It made the rounds on social, but it was quickly debunked by Nick Harris of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram.
Cowboys website tricked fans into thinking team signed Daniel Jones
That is some excellent clarity from Harris.
Harris added that Jones' player card was formed in November of 2023 after Jones suffered a torn ACL before a matchup against the Cowboys. It was made to update the injury and disclose whom the Giants would start at quarterback vs. Dallas the following week.
If that isn't enough to convince Cowboys fans that Jones to Dallas is not happening - or least isn't imminent - NFL insider Josina Anderson reported the team is not currently pursuing the former No. 6 overall pick.
That should alleviate concerns for now, but it doesn't rule out the Cowboys potentially kicking the tires on Jones in the future.
After all, Rush and Trey Lance are free agents. Through two starts, Rush hasn't given the front office any reason to bring him back. Lance, meanwhile, can't even sniff the field even though Rush has been stinking up the joint. It seems the coaching staff has zero confidence in Lance.
There have been crazier ideas. That's all we're saying.
Harris' timely update and Anderson's report should put the Danny Dimes to Dallas buzz on hold for the time being, but something tells us this won't be the last we hear of the Cowboys and Jones potentially joining forces.
