If there is one thing Dallas Cowboys fans have learned over the years with this front office, it is to expect the unexpected. Sometimes, though, moves are so obviously a bad idea that it feels inevitable that the Cowboys are going to follow through.
Look no further than Dallas trading a fourth-round pick for Trey Lance when they were obviously going to pay Dak Prescott.
How about trading another fourth-round pick for receiver Jonathan Mingo? You know, the guy who had 55 catches and zero touchdowns in 24 career games and likely would have been released by Carolina in the offseason. The 3-6 Cowboys who just lost Prescott for the season simply had to have Mingo.
Those deals have Cowboys fans on edge, but Dallas might be kicking the tires on a move that may actually break the fan base. In light of Daniel Jones being released by the Giants, the Cowboys have been floated as a potential landing spot.
The source admittedly is not legitimate, but they are a notable Twitter user who has been accurate with rumors and reports in the past.
Wild rumor suggests the Cowboys are interested in former Giants QB Daniel Jones
If that avatar looks familiar that's because "Rickey" has been a prominent figure in the NFL rumor mill. While he has some semblance of credibility, he is also a random person who isn't a legit league source.
For what it's worth, the source was on Jones getting released days ago and he's mentioned the Cowboys as a landing spot multiple times. At the very least, this is something to keep an eye on, especially if Dallas' offense struggles to put up points Sunday against the Commanders.
Cooper Rush has struggled mightily in two starts since Prescott's hamstring injury. The Cowboys finally have an opportunity to evaluate Trey Lance, but it seems the coaching staff has next to zero confidence in the former No. 3 overall pick. Lance continuing to ride the bench might simply be a case of him not being good enough.
Jones had a dreadful final season in East Rutherford. While he won't warrant starting consideration from any team for a while, he can be an adequate backup. Rush and Lance are free agents after the season. It's possible Dallas' front office views Jones as a potential long-term backup.
It would be hilarious if the Cowboys sign Jones, but would it really be that preposterous? It's another opportunity for Jerry Jones to make his free-falling team relevant.
Again, this is NOT a legitimate source, but it's suddenly within the realm of possibility that Daniel Jones starts - or at least plays - against the Giants on Thanksgiving.
