The Dallas Cowboys were handed a major punch in the gut as the NFL's legal tampering window kicked off. Within the first hour, star nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis agreed to a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Dallas' head may not be in the right spot in the first few hours.
The Cowboys have agreed to a deal with long snapper Trent Sieg that will pay him $4.45 million over the next three years. Long snappers will not decide the outcome of any Cowboys games this season, which will make fans upset that this was the first thing Dallas decided to finalize.
While the Cowboys clearly aren't done building their roster, it might not be a great look for the organization to quickly snatch up a long snapper and seemingly sit on their hands in the rest of free agency while some of their more established players end up flaking away.
Cowboys sign long snapper Trent Sieg to three-year contract
Sieg, by all accounts, is a serviceable player at his position. Even if Dallas wanted to bring him back, the fact that they have already lost Lewis and seemingly prioritized their long snapper in the early stages of the free agent window is not going to satisfy an irritated fanbase.
Not only is Lewis gone, making the hole in their secondary even bigger, but the Cowboys will also need to address a very thin running back room, an offensive line that just lost Zack Martin to retirement, and a collection of wide receivers outside of CeeDee Lamb that appears tp be thoroughly below average at this juncture.
Considering how the Cowboys have largely eschewed participating in the annual free agent frenzy (often in the name of pursuing extensions for some of their veteran players), Dallas may not be able to reload the roster in time to compete with teams like Philadelphia and Washington in the division.
But hey, at least the long snapper situation is taken care of! It seemed like Cowboys fans were waking up in cold sweats wondering what would happen here.
