NFL drug tests most random Cowboys player after dominant win over Browns
By Jerry Trotta
Since Mike McCarthy was hired as head coach in 2020 the Dallas Cowboys have struggled to win big games on the road. One win might not be enough to nix that narrative, but McCarthy deserves credit for having the Cowboys ready to dominate the Browns in Cleveland on Sunday.
The Cowboys took a 20-3 lead into halftime and the game was effectively over early in the third quarter after KaVontae Turpin returned a punt to the house to extend the lead to 24 points.
There were simply too many standout players to shower each one with praise. However, the likes of Micah Parsons, DeMarvion Overshown, Eric Kendricks, DeMarcus Lawrence and Tyler Smith were all catalysts in the win.
We could name another handful of Cowboys who turned in good games. One could understand if the NFL tried to catch any one of these players by surprise, but they instead chose to hit a special teams player with a random drug test Monday morning.
We know what you're thinking: No, it's not Brandon Aubrey.
Cowboys long-snapper Trent Sieg hit with random drug test by NFL
In his second season as the Cowboys' long-snapper, Sieg absolutely trucked Browns punt returner Jaelon Darden. It was a textbook hit-stick tackle and one that sent a message being that Darden had given Dallas' coverage team fits all game. He returned five punts for 75 yards, including a long of 28 yards after the Cowboys went three and out on their first drive.
It was the kind of tackle you would expect from a seasoned gunner. While Sieg has played special teams throughout his career, he has never finished a season with more than two tackles. Incredibly, Sieg logged two tackles on Sunday, so he has already matched his season-high for his career and is now five away from matching the seven tackles he compiled over his first six seasons.
It is clear Sieg's hit stick caught the NFL's attention, but it is hilarious that the veteran long-snapper was (seemingly) the lone Cowboys player who received a drug test on Monday.
DeMarvion Overshown would have been a prime candidate after his 11-tackle performance and logic-defying sack of Deshaun Watson. Micah Parsons would have been an obvious pick, but he was shot out of a cannon on Sunday as well. Even vet Eric Kendricks played like his hair was on fire.
Cowboys fans might remember CeeDee Lamb getting drug tested last season after he erupted for 227 receiving yards against the Lions.
Regardless, this is a moment that Sieg won't soon forget. If anything, he should take it as a compliment. Patriots edge rusher Keion White, who posted 2.5 sacks in New England's upset win over the Bengals, is the only other player who has publicized their random drug test after Week 1.
That is impressive company for Dallas' long-snapper.
