Caleb Downs was the apple of the Dallas Cowboys' eye during the 2026 NFL Draft process. So much so that their eventual draft-night trade-up was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to their rabid pursuit of the generational defensive back prospect out of Ohio State.
With that sentiment can come some hefty expectations for a young player. But Christian Parker and Brian Schottenheimer haven't shied away from giving him major responsibilities in a key spot, and they even briefly considered him a candidate to be the green dot. This is the level of player Dallas has.
But the exact plan for implementing Downs to the best of his abilities, and to the highest benefit of the Cowboys' defense, remained to be seen. The Dallas Star-Telegram's Nick Harris confirmed, however, that at training camp, it has involved a little bit of everything, just as this fanbase dreamed of.
"On Wednesday, Downs played in the slot, he played in the box, and he played as a deep safety in different variations of the first-team defense. His role will continue to be fluid, as the big intrigue around drafting him with the No. 11 overall selection was the flexibility he could give to the defense. That’s already being experimented with just one training camp practice into his career."

Now, again, that level of responsibility would make any normal young player's head spin. But Downs, as Dallas fans are quickly learning, is no ordinary young player. According to The Athletic's Jon Machota, Downs' diverse workload hasn't slowed him down. Quite the opposite, in fact.
"One of his most notable plays was a fumble recovery in team drills Wednesday. Nothing about Downs makes him seem like a rookie. He is very calculated in what he does on the field before practice, during and after."
It is hard to imagine Downs getting off to a better start than he has with the Cowboys. For a team that struggled at practically every spot in the secondary last year, it always made sense for Jerry Jones and Co. to target a player who could feasibly fill in at every spot.
But with the secondary bolstered around Downs, Parker and his staff can have some fun with fooling opposing offenses. Oh, Downs is lined up near the line of scrimmage? Surely, he's blitzing. Oh no wait, he's now dropping back and playing center field, and here comes Cobie Durant with pressure?
Sign me up for whatever mastermind defensive conconctions Parker can cook up in his lab with Downs' versatility at the center of it. Not only is he a great player who is a chess piece, but by being so, he's a connector; he elevates those around him and makes everything flow smoothly.
A player like P.J. Locke goes down with an injury? Downs can drop back and play a bit more free safety. The Cowboys' second corner opposite Bland is getting put on an island? Let's roll Downs into the flat or over the top to help him out.
Downs really is the antidote that the Dallas defense needed after such a rough 2025 campaign, and it is an incredible sign that Parker's plan for him is to dive headfirst into all that he is capable of on the field. This is a win-now window; there is no reason for Downs to take baby steps when he can sprint.

It's not just Parker who is seeing a lot out of Downs in the early going, though. His teammates seem to believe in him wholeheartedly as well, which is arguably more important. As Parker so lovingly demonstrated during Thursday's practice, the players have to figure it out, at the end of the day.
Right guard Tyler Booker, who, to be fair, won't be lining up alongside Downs on Sundays, was also his teammate once before at Alabama, where Downs played as a freshman. And Booker's recollection of how quickly Downs made an impact for the Crimson Tide should get Cowboys fans excited.
"To see how he played and raised the level of play of everybody … I knew he was special," Booker said.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown took things a step further when talking to CBS Sports.
"We're not even looking at [Caleb Downs] as a rookie. We're looking at him as a guy that's going to change this defense around, going to change the culture. He's won at every level of football," Overshown said.
If the Cowboys' coaches believe in him so much early on that they're throwing the gauntlet at him, and this is what his teammates are saying about him, then what choice do Dallas fans have, other than to irrationally get their hopes up about Parker making their Downs-laced dreams come true?
