CeeDee Lamb made Cowboys history vs. Chargers (and could make more on Christmas Day)

On Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys were officially eliminated from postseason contention, as the Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up the NFC East with a 29-18 win over the Washington Commanders. And on Sunday, the weekend got even worse, as America's Team took its fifth double-digit defeat of the season in a 34-17 thumping at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers.

As it's gone for most of the season, the Dallas defense struggled to make stops, allowing the Bolts' offense, which had only surpassed the 300-yard mark once in its last four outings, to rack up a season-high 452 total yards, with 300 of those coming from Justin Herbert, who played a near-perfect game in recording a season-high passer rating of 132.8.

The Cowboys' offense was sharp in the first half, tallying 211 total yards and a dozen first downs. But the second half was a different story, as Dallas was shut out on the scoreboard and recorded just 129 total yards and six first downs.

But despite the loss, which means the Cowboys must now win their final two games to avoid back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since three straight 5-11 campaigns from 2000 to 2002, there was a little franchise history made, as CeeDee Lamb surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the fifth straight season, thus becoming just the second Dallas wideout to do so. Yet another No. 88, three-time Super Bowl champ Michael Irvin, was the first to accomplish the feat by hitting the mark from 1991 to 1995.

Lamb is also just the fifth player in Cowboys history to reach 1,000 yards in five of his first six seasons and just the third wideout in NFL history to reach 1,000 total yards from scrimmage in each of his first six years, joining Randy Moss and Mike Evans.

Furthermore, as George Pickens has also hit four digits, there have now been just eight instances in Dallas history in which two players have gone for 1,000 receiving yards, the last coming in 2019 with Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup each hitting the mark.

Lamb ultimately ended his day with six catches for 51 yards, which now gives him 565 career regular-season receptions for 7,366 yards. As such, if the four-time Pro Bowler can get 94 yards during the Cowboys' Christmas Day matchup with the Washington Commanders, he'll surpass yet another No. 88, Dez Bryant, for fifth place on the franchise's all-time receiving yards list.

And depending on how things play out over the final two weeks, his reception total could result in an NFL record. But he'll have a fight on his hands for that one.

Coming into the week, the league record for the most receptions by a player through their first six seasons belonged to Jarvis Landry, who notched 564, the first 400 with the Miami Dolphins from 2014 to 2017 and then 164 with the Cleveland Browns between the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

As mentioned, Lamb now has 565 regular-season receptions for his career, which obviously means he surpassed Landry. However, his fellow 2020 draftee, Justin Jefferson, came into the week with 561 career catches. And with six grabs of his own in the Minnesota Vikings' 16-13 win over the New York Giants on Sunday, he now has 567.

So, again, Lamb could end up with this NFL record at season's end, but he'll have to be a bit more productive than Jefferson over the final two weeks.
