The Dallas Cowboys have put together a killer NFL Draft class thus far, loading up on defensive talent to retool their unit. They prioritized getting after opposing quarterbacks, and that came into focus again with the selection of Alabama defensive lineman LT Overton at No. 137.
Overton is a big-bodied defender who’s listed as an edge but can also hold up against the run. That versatility fits nicely alongside a defensive tackle room anchored by Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark.
However, John Mitchell of Bama Hammer offered a more measured take that might temper expectations, noting that Overton’s former five-star pedigree didn’t always match what Alabama fans saw on the field.
"Production never quite matched the hype for LT Overton, who was one of the top players in the country in pass-rush win-rate in 2024, but managed only six sacks in two seasons at Alabama. Likely best suited as 4-3 DT or a 3-4 DE."
Dallas Cowboys' fourth-round pick LT Overton needs a lot of coaching
The former Alabama standout was trending up as a potential top 50 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he decided to return to Tuscaloosa. That didn't do much to help his draft stock, however, as he recorded six tackles for loss and four sacks.
With Christian Parker expected to deploy a 3-4 base and mix in 4-2-5 nickel looks, the early projection is for Overton to develop into a 3-4 defensive end or a 4i. That said, he may need to add some bulk to handle that role consistently, even if Dallas also taps into his edge-rushing ability. As long as he can generate pressure, that’s a strong starting point in Parker’s system.
Overton will likely begin his career buried on the depth chart, but that doesn’t mean he can't grow into a rotational player in year one.
This isn’t a pick Cowboys fans should dislike, but it does call for some patience. There’s plenty of upside with Overton, who’s still just 21 years old. Now it’s on Parker and the defensive staff to make sure he’s put in the right position to succeed.
There's a reason Overton fell to the fourth round. As long as he develops into a productive role player, it'll go down as a worthwhile investment.
