3 winners and 3 losers from Cowboys’ chaotic Week 4 win vs. Texans

The Dallas Cowboys needed a win in the worst way in Week 4.

Coming off a coaching disaster against the Ravens, Dallas could ill-afford to go 1-3 in the first month of the season. But somehow, some way, the Cowboys stole a road win against one of the league’s best defenses. And now, they sit at 2-2 and are tied with the Eagles despite a very up-and-down month.

There were a few players who saved their bacon on Sunday, including a few very obvious ones. So, without further ado, here are the biggest winners and losers from the Cowboys' comeback win in Week 4:

Biggest winners and losers from Cowboys' gutsy Week 4 win

Winner: Dak Prescott, QB

The Cowboys put Prescott into a nearly impossible situation every week. They ask him to be perfect. Score 30+ points and never turn the ball over. If he can do that, it’ll give Dallas a chance to win the game. A chance.

And yet somehow, Prescott delivers more often than not. And he did it against one of the NFL’s most talented defenses on Sunday. The Cowboys scored 34 points despite two missed field goals in the first half. Prescott completed 32 of 45 passes for 335 yards and led four massive touchdown drives.

The biggest drive came late in the fourth quarter with the Cowboys scoring the game-winning touchdown with under a minute left. Prescott completed several big plays on the drive, including a fourth-down to Jake Ferguson that would have ended the game if it were incomplete.

Prescott is playing at an MVP level, and Dallas has managed to survive a rocky September because of him. Kudos to Prescott and the offense as they continue to rack up points every single week.

Winner: Joey Porter Jr, CB

You probably didn’t notice much of the newest cornerback for the Cowboys in Week 4. And that’s a great thing.

The Texans avoided Porter at all costs, and he did not allow a reception in his first game with his new team. We will talk about the other defensive backs in a minute, but this was an outstanding debut for Porter, and the hope is that he can continue to shut down one side of the field moving forward.

Winner: CeeDee Lamb, WR

What more can we say about CeeDee Lamb at this point? He’s been one of the league’s best receivers for years now and he’s off to the best start of his career. Lamb had a career-high 17 receptions on 21 targets on Sunday as the Texans could not stop him whatsoever.

On the final drive of the game, Lamb caught six passes including the game-winning touchdown on a skinny post. Dallas moved him all over the field and whenever they needed a big play, he delivered.

Lamb already has 498 yards on the season and has already gotten into the end zone four times. While this pace obviously won’t hold, he’s averaging a whopping 124 receiving yards per game in the first month of the season.

For all of the talk about who is the best receiver in Dallas, Lamb has really silenced the doubters to open the year.

Loser: CBs Daron Bland and Reddy Stewart

I’m lumping these two players together as they were the most frequently targeted defensive backs on Sunday.

On the very first play of the game, Stewart slipped at the top of the route and allowed Nico Collins to catch a pass for a huge reception. That wasn’t the only miscue for Stewart, but it’s hard to be too upset with him given that he is a practice squad player who was promoted to the 53-man roster.

The same can’t be said for Bland, who is one of the NFL’s highest-paid cornerbacks. C.J. Stroud and the Texans went after him all game long and had zero fear of his playmaking skills. Dallas paid Bland to be a shutdown cornerback, and he’s been anything but over the last two weeks.

Hopefully, his play will improve as the season goes on, but it’s been a rough start to the year for the former All-Pro defender.

Loser: Nick Sorensen, ST Coach

There might not be a coach in the NFL who is more on the hot seat than Nick Sorensen. After a disastrous outing in Week 3, the Cowboys were somehow worse in Week 4.

Brandon Aubrey missed a long field goal and had another blocked. The kickoff unit allowed a huge return to set up the game-winning score for the Texans, and it was just another week of multiple miscues for Dallas.

The only positive from the special teams unit was the coverage unit, as Brevyn Spann-Ford made multiple big plays, but that was about it. If the Cowboys are going to be viewed as a serious contender in the NFC, they'll need their special teams unit to get a lot better in the next quarter of the season.
