Before the 2022 season began, the Cowboys released Greg Zuerlein after he was 63-of-76 in two seasons. The real issue was his issues with extra points as Zuerlein missed nine of those during his time in Big D.

However, they weren’t truly ready to move on. Instead, the front office wanted to get out of his pricey contract and then attempted to bring him back on a more affordable deal. That didn’t work out as ‘Greg the Leg’ signed with the New York Jets.

With Gang Green, he was 30-of-37 on field goals and 28-of-29 on extra points. As for his replacement, Dallas went with Brett Maher after a failed attempt with undrafted rookie Jonathan Garibay. Maher was by far the superior player in the regular season, which was a pleasant surprise.

He connected on 90.6 percent of his attempts (29-of-32) and was 50-of-53 on extra points. Then, the postseason happened.

Maher whiffed on five extra points in a row and was just 1-of-6 in the two postseason games. To his credit, Maher was 3-of-4 on field goals but it was a terrible showing.

For that reason, he’s not expected to be back in 2023 and that could lead to a reunion with Zeurlein, who has always been a favorite of special teams coach John Fassel.
