Cowboys Rumors: Stefon Diggs fuels trade speculation with cryptic tweets
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys are going to add a wide receiver or two this offseason. We’re all aware CeeDee Lamb is a premium-level talent, but the options behind him leave something to be desired, including Michael Gallup.
While Micah Parsons has been busy recruiting star defenders to Dallas on social media, Trevon Diggs has been fixated on getting his brother, Bills star receiver Stefon Diggs, traded to the Cowboys.
It’s not typical of Dallas to go out and trade for a stud wideout. In fact, they did the polar opposite of that last offseason by trading Amari Cooper.
You could certainly make the case for the Cowboys signing a free agent — perhaps Odell Beckham Jr. or someone of that ilk — and drafting a prospect with one of their first three picks to reset the money at the position.
What if, by chance, the front office shoots for the stars, though? What if Diggs demands a trade out of Buffalo after the Bills ended another promising season in disappointing fashion? What then?
Anything is possible, but Diggs’ latest cryptic activity on social media only fuels the trade speculation that’s followed him since the Bills lost to the Bengals at home in the Divisional Round.
Cowboys Rumors: Does Stefon Diggs’ cryptic Twitter activity mean he’ll demand trade from Bills?
It’s well-documented that Diggs was furious after the Bills’ playoff exit. The Pro Bowler was seen causing a raucous on the sidelines, and even had a heated exchange with quarterback Josh Allen. It was reported Diggs left Highmark Stadium as soon as the game ended, before reporters arrived at Buffalo’s locker room.
Diggs took to social media to air his grievances, and the trade rumors — helped by his younger brother — have followed ever since.
After a brief hiatus, Diggs returned to Twitter with a cryptic post that prompted a response from teammate and former Cowboy Cole Beasley.
Exactly one minute later, Diggs tweeted the following:
What could that mean?
A few days earlier, Diggs tweeted a GIF that seemingly showed a movie-goer enjoying a snack of some sort. Make of that what you will.
Of course, none of this confirms Diggs wants out of Buffalo, or that the receiver-needy Bills would even entertain offloading him … or that the Cowboys would agree to absorb his contract and give up the necessary draft capital to net him.
A pre-June 1 trade would cost Buffalo $34.7 million in dead money. A post-June 1 trade would shrink that number to $11.856 million, so the idea that it’s impossible for the Bills to jettison Diggs is misconstrued.
Again, there are a lot of variables at play here beyond Diggs’ social media endeavors, but these specific posts do make for interesting conversation about where he stands with his current organization.
In the meantime, Trevon Diggs and Cowboys Nation will continue recruiting the 29-year-old star to Dallas.
