Cowboys fans will love TY Hilton’s quote on mentoring CeeDee Lamb

With CeeDee Lamb establishing himself as a WR1, Michael Gallup coming up with occasional splash plays, and TY Hilton contributing maybe the biggest play of the season, the Dallas Cowboys’ receiver room is finally rounding into form as we approach the final two weeks of the regular season.

Talk about good timing, right?

Though blossoming at the right time, there are still concerns about the load Lamb’s carried all season. While Gallup has three touchdowns in the last four games, he hasn’t topped 40 yards or four catches in either fixture. James Washington has become an afterthought, and Noah Brown, despite all of his clutch plays, is better served as a block-first wideout relative to a three-down pass-catcher.

That’s what made the TY Hilton signing so significant. Though 33 years old and having not played a snap all year,  adding a veteran with Hilton’s experience, leadership, and ability to read a defense cannot be overstated.

The last time we checked, Dallas’ receiver room doesn’t have that kind of presence. Yes, Lamb is great and inching close to superstar status, and Gallup and Brown are in their fifth and sixth seasons, respectively, but they’re not grizzled vets.

Hilton, meanwhile, fills that bill with room to spare, and he’s already take it upon himself to mentor Lamb and the rest of the group.

New Cowboys wideout TY Hilton mentoring CeeDee Lamb is awesome.

It wasn’t long ago that Hilton was the young buck in the Colts’ receiver room. While Marvin Harrison retired four years before Indianapolis drafted Hilton in 2012, Reggie Wayne didn’t hang ’em up until 2014, meaning he shared a locker room with Hilton for two full seasons. You can’t put a price on that kind of experience.

Here’s what Lamb said a week ago about his initial interactions with Hilton.

"“Today, I talked to him quite a bit more than I did [in his first practice],” Lamb said, via the team’s website. “I feel like he has to get more comfortable here and I let him know I’m available for anything he has questions about. It’s him helping me and me helping him, in a sense. Just critiquing me. . . . He’s seen the game for a while, so anything he says as far as route running or a release, anything is a positive — especially coming from him.”"

Just seven days later, Hilton helped Lamb score a touchdown in the Cowboys’ biggest win of the season against the Eagles. Here’s the play Hilton was referring to. Lamb created enough separation from the safety to allow himself enough time to make a move — a filthy, yet casual spin — and find the end zone.

This is just so cool. Hilton has even’t been in the building for a month, and he’s already impacting games by passing on wisdom.

Beyond that, though, Hilton made a difference on the field in his Cowboys debut. After drawing an illegal contact on 4th and 7, Hilton hauled in a 3rd and 30 heave from Dak Prescott with Dallas trailing 34-27 with eight minutes left in regulation.

If Hilton doesn’t make that play — or Dak doesn’t make that throw — there’s no telling how that game finishes. Regardless, the addition of Hilton already paying dividends just shows how savvy of a move this was by the front office.
