Travis Etienne butt fumble sets Cowboys up for early TD vs Jaguars
By Adam Weinrib
Ezekiel Elliott may have punched the ball into the end zone, but it was an entirely different “end” that helped set up the Dallas Cowboys’ first scoring drive of Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After a solid first Cowboys drive ended without points, the Jaguars began driving, but their efforts were quickly aborted by a sequel that Mark Sanchez has likely been waiting for for an entire decade: The Butt Fumble Part II.
Running back Travis Etienne took a handoff from Trevor Lawrence, but the Clemson connection couldn’t overcome the gravitational pull of OL Brandon Scherff’s backside.
Etienne never really controlled the ball, rambled directly into a butt, and turned it over into Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson’s arms, who was in the right place at the right time.
Not to make the scrappy Jaguars the butt of the joke, but so far, everything in the wake of the Butt Fumble is coming up Dallas.
Dallas Cowboys score early TD after Travis Etienne butt fumble
Just a few plays later, the Cowboys capitalized on Etienne’s mistake, leaving the Jaguars bringing up the rear.
Elliott polished off the resulting Dallas drive from the 10-yard line, appearing to be stopped short of the goal line before rolling over the defender and extending into the end zone. Sometimes, a little extra effort can make all the difference.
This touchdown marked the seventh straight game with a score for Elliott. Huh. Feels like the Tony Pollard-Zeke balance is still completely dead on?
With three quarters to go, the Cowboys will need a strong performance to avoid the trap game and close this one out.
Etienne, meanwhile, got trapped by the booty. Hate to see it, but it happens to the best of us.
We’ve heard of ground and pound, but this was a little ridiculous.
