NBC’s Sunday Night Football production team had better be on the lookout for someone else to uncomfortably toss things to at halftime, as former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett might be close to receiving yet another lifeline.

Per sources, Garrett is among the two remaining finalists to ascend to the Stanford football head coaching position, recently vacated by David Shaw after 11 years.

Fresh off predicting a 50-point Cowboys win Sunday night against the Colts (so close!), Garrett is now in the final stages of potentially earning his first chance as a head ball coach since his contract in Dallas wasn’t renewed following the 2019 season. From there, he moved on to being the offensive coordinator under Joe Judge for two season with the New York Giants before transitioning into … eh, let’s call it broadcasting.

But can the Princetonian Garrett recruit along with the best of the Pac-12? Will his steady hand be the calming influence college kids need, or will he be viewed as the crusty old dean?

And how’s he going to handle the man in a tree suit? These, and more burning questions, must be answered before the two sides can move forward.

Former Cowboys HC Jason Garrett could be named Stanford head coach

Per Pete Thamel’s sources, Garrett is among Stanford’s top two targets alongside Sacramento State head coach Troy Taylor.

Taylor visited campus already, while Garrett is slated to follow behind him later this week (FYI, Thursday is already pretty “late” in any week).

The 54-year-old Taylor has been at his current position since 2019, racking up a combined 30-7 record, as well as a remarkable 23-1 mark in conference, culminating in the program’s first-ever undefeated regular season in 2022.

Garrett did … not that in Dallas.

It seems this chase is coming to a head, and Cowboys fans will find out by early next week whether the experienced Garrett or the upstart Taylor will emerge victorious in this head-to-head battle.

Based on early reports, though, Taylor has already won the clock management battle. You want to get in for an official visit earlier in the week, not later.
