Since we know you’re all thinking it… Yes. We know that Dallas Cowboys GM Jerry Jones isn’t going to go and look for a veteran quarterback. We know.

He’s blatantly said he feels Cooper Rush is the answer, and we saw him sit idly by with every other position this offseason, so there’s no reason to believe he will do anything in this situation. However, that doesn’t mean that analysts, former players, and fans aren’t still going to be making suggestions for how to save the team after losing Dak Prescott to a hand fracture.

The latest person to throw his idea into the suggestion box is a man very familiar with the Cowboys: Hall of Famer Drew Pearson. The wide receiver spent all 11 of his years with Dallas and is a member of the Cowboys Ring of Honor.

The Super Bowl Champion was recently interviewed by TMZ Sports and asked what he thinks the Cowboys need to do in the wake of losing their starting quarterback.

"“What they gotta do is pull out all stops. Call Cam. Call Kaepernick. Call anybody out there. I used to be a quarterback. I threw three touchdowns in the NFL. Call me!”"

His first suggestion is one that many have presented in Cam Newton. But Pearson is one of few to suggest now infamous Civil Rights activist and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since becoming a free agent in 2017 after famously kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 in protest of police brutality and racial inequality. He’s had workouts with several teams since, but nothing has panned out.

Regardless, Pearson seems to think Kaepernick’s former experience makes him a good candidate for the job:

"We got to have somebody there with experience, some game experience. I’m not talking about coming in and mopping up for somebody after the game is already won or already lost. I’m talking about somebody that’s been there. Been in the big time, knows how to be a starting quarterback in the National Football League."

Cowboys legend Drew Pearson suggests the team call Colin Kaepernick to replace Dak Prescott

It’s worth noting that the Pro Bowler dialed back on his suggestion a bit by following it up with saying that the Cowboys would need a veteran who is in shape and ready to play ASAP. Kaepernick is arguably not prepared to be in this system at all right now.

So, what does the team need to do if they stick with Rush? Pearson suggests that other offensive players need to do their jobs significantly better than they did in Week 1 to elevate the QB position, including one who wears his former number:

"“What they gotta do is rally around Cooper Rush. All you did was take Dak out of the offense and put Cooper Rush in there. All the other pieces are set, they’re there. They’re not the best pieces. I’m disappointed in the receivers. I’m disappointed in ‘double 8s,’ Ceedee, the way he played. But this is what’s left with the moves the Cowboys made and didn’t make.”"

The Hall of Famer, like many other fans and analysts, was also not afraid to criticize the front office and express his disappointment in their inability to bolster the roster during the offseason:

"Losing (Amari) Cooper and losing (Cedrick) Wilson. You couldn’t lose both of those guys. You had to keep one or the other. You lose La’el Collins. You pay Dak Prescott all this money to be your starting quarterback now and into the future but what you gotta do is surround him with some people so you can take advantage of his abilities and what he brings to the table. And that’s what I’m disappointed in… that the offseason didn’t produce what we needed to produce to surround Dak with the protection and the receivers he needed. Then, the running game would open up if that line was healthy and that’s what we gotta rely on right now. Put all our efforts behind Cooper Rush and then get the running game going and hopefully that will help us as we get ready for Cincinnati.”"

You’re preaching to the choir, Drew. Hopefully, it’s not too little too late.
