Last year, the Dallas defense made some huge strides under Dan Quinn who was a serious head coaching candidate in the offseason but was somehow retained.

They were 19th in the NFL in yards surrendered but seventh in points and first in interceptions with 26. They also had 41 total sacks, with Micah Parsons leading the way with 13 of them.

Second on the team was Randy Gregory, who had six despite missing five games. Gregory was lost in free agency due to front-office stubbornness, but they might have a decent replacement in Sam Williams.

A second-round pick out of Mississippi, Williams played incredibly well in the SEC and that play continued in the preseason.

Williams proved he can win with speed and power, and blowing past No. 9 overall pick Charles Cross against Seattle was an impressive play.

Even more encouraging was seeing Williams make a few plays in the run game, which is something that was said to be a weakness as he was working out for the NFL Draft.

Dallas will be able to lean on Parsons and Lawrence but having another player who can explode into the opposing backfield is always a plus. They have Dante Fowler, Jr. and Dorance Armstrong, but the explosion Williams has is what they’re going to need in Week 1.
