2. Will Grier, QB

Right now, Will Grier is in a battle with Cooper Rush for the No. 2 job behind Prescott. Grier has only appeared in one game this preseason and while he looked to have more zip on his passes, this coaching staff has more experience with Rush, which means they likely feel more confident in him as the backup.

That experience they have with the former undrafted free agent from Central Michigan includes a game in 2021, where Rush filled in for an injured Prescott against Minnesota in Week 8. Rush finished that contest with 325 yards and had two touchdowns — including a game-winning touchdown pass to Amari Cooper.

The familiarity he has with this staff, as well as the trust he earned in that win last season means that Grier is going to have to show he’s head and shoulders above Rush, or else he won’t beat him out — even with Rush having a game to forget against Denver in this preseason.

Even so, if Dallas were to waive Grier as they fill out their 53-man roster, it would be highly unlikely that the former West Virginia signal-caller would go unclaimed. Some team out there in need of a No. 2 quarterback — or even a developmental prospect — would be willing to roll the dice. Quarterbacks are so important that teams will continue to gamble on players, so Dallas should know that waiving Grier likely means they’ll never see him again.
