Specialists (4):

Brett Maher
Bryan Anger
Jake McQuaide
KaVontae Turpin

Rolling with Brett Maher feels like a gamble, but he was pretty solid in the preseason. He wasn’t knocking them in from beyond 60 as we saw during his first stint with Dallas, but it’s a fair trade-off should he find consistency inside of 50-yards, which was an issue for him in the past.

At punter, Bryan Anger returns and is still among the best in the business. The 33-year-old has 10 years of experience and averaged 48.4 yards per punt in his first season with Dallas.

He will be fielding snaps from Jake McQuaide, who is back as the long snapper. He’s got experience with special teams coach John Fassel and has always done a good job.

There’s an extra specialist on this list now as the Cowboys keep USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin who proved to be explosive in his first preseason action. Turpin took two kicks to the house against the Los Angeles Chargers, which all but guaranteed he will make the team.

Turpin also got in the action as a receiver in the preseason finale. He had one reception for eight yards but could have had more. He beat his man on a route early in the game but Rush never had time to look downfield due to pressure coming in his face.

Had he been afforded time, he would have seen Turpin ready to haul one in and take it to the house. His ability to help at the receiver is going to be important early on as Gallup and Washington recover but he’s still primarily on this team to flip field position and hopefully run in a touchdown or two as a return man.
