1. Will Grier, Quarterback

Will Grier was claimed last season by Dallas when the Carolina Panthers decided it was time to move in a different direction. A former third-round pick, Grier spent time at Florida and West Virginia during his collegiate career.

As a member of the Gators, he worked with Cowboys quarterback coach Doug Nussmeier, who was the offensive coordinator for Florida at the time. After spending the entire 2021 campaign on the sideline, Grier entered this camp ready to prove he’s capable of taking on the No. 2 quarterback role.

Throughout the practice sessions in Oxnard, he did exactly that. Grier showed command of the offense and was crisp with his throws.

Unfortunately, he was unable to show how far he’s come against Denver as a groin injury sidelined him for the game. He has since returned to practice and is expected to play against Los Angeles.

Should he be able to suit up, this could be a huge game for Grier, especially considering how much Cooper Rush struggled in their loss to Denver. Rush had the upper hand considering his time with the team as well as his strong performance in his first career start against Minnesota last season.

But in the NFL, it’s not about what you have done in the past, but what you can do now. Rush’s play in Week 1 could allow doubt to creep in, and if Grier capitalizes, he could slide into the primary backup spot behind Dak Prescott.
