After CeeDee Lamb found out (without warning at the gym) that the Dallas Cowboys were trading his former teammate Amari Cooper, the third-year receiver knew he had no choice but to step up. Lamb knows the pressure he is under as the team’s new star receiver at only 23 years old.

Plus, until Michael Gallup can return from injury, he will be the only experienced veteran on the team at WR to start the year with just two years as an NFL receiver under his belt.

Quarterback Dak Prescott seems to have full faith in the former first-round pick. But it’s important to remember that out of the 36 games Lamb has played in since joining the league, the Cowboys leader was only the quarterback for 20 of them due to the ankle injury that kept the QB out of most of the 2020 season.

In those 20 games, Prescott and Lamb have connected for 102 catches resulting in 1,423 yards and eight touchdowns. Thankfully, No. 4 is experiencing his first fully-healthy offseason since 2019 and has had a ton of time to put in work with his new WR1. What we’ve seen in OTAs and training camp has been promising, and hopefully, we get to see the two gelling together against another team in some preseason moments.

Because so much focus will be put on Lamb with both Gallup and James Washington out for a bit, the young receiver is being deemed a dark horse to lead the league in receiving yards. Last year, he had an impressive 1,102 yards in just 13 games started. Keep in mind, that was when he was sharing targets with Cooper, Cedrick Wilson, and Gallup.

This year should be a much different story, and the NFL media is picking up on that.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb ranked the No. 7 QB and pass-catcher duo in the league

NFL.com recently released a list of the top 10 WR-QB duos heading into 2022. Despite the fact that no one has seen Prescott and Lamb truly operate as the main pair, the two were ranked seventh in the NFL. Here was the final list in order:

  1. Joe Burrow & Ja’Marr Chase
  2. Josh Allen & Stefon Diggs
  3. Matthew Stafford & Cooper Kupp
  4. Derek Carr & Davante Adams
  5. Patrick Mahomes & Travis Kelce
  6. Tom Brady & Mike Evans
  7. Dak Prescott & CeeDee Lamb
  8. Justin Herbert & Keenan Allen
  9. Kyler Murray & DeAndre Hopkins
  10. Jameis Winston & Michael Thomas

This is certainly nice company for the two Cowboys to be a part of.

If Prescott and Lamb can truly be the No. 7 duo in the league, that would be great news for the Cowboys. The WR needs to work on his drops and the offensive line needs to get better to give their QB enough time to make smart passes.

The biggest fear about this situation is the thought that many teams will try to double or even triple-team Lamb, especially at the beginning of the year. To keep this from being a problem, Ezekiel Elliott, Tony Pollard, and Dalton Schultz will all need to step up. That will help give the offense some playcalling variety and it will hopefully keep some bodies away from the new WR1.

Big things are expected for these two this year. Now, we just need to see it happen in a game situation.
