An undrafted free agent in 2020, Terence Steele was thrown into the fire right away due to Tyron Smith missing 14 games that year. There were more injuries for Smith as well as a suspension for La’el Collins that once again meant Steele was on the field for the majority of his sophomore season for Dallas.

Thankfully, he did show a lot of growth in year two, but the coaching staff is still placing a lot on his shoulders after moving him to the starting spot after releasing Collins. While there have been some decent moments for Steele, he still hasn’t given everyone a warm and fuzzy feeling.

For instance, former scout and current Cowboys writer Bryan Broaddus has been less than impressed with Steele and would like to see rookie Tyler Smith get a shot at the job.

"“I don’t feel great about right tackle,” said Broaddus. “I watched Terence Steele get walked. Tyler Smith is so much stronger than Terence Steele right now.  More athletic and stronger. People have figured out how to play Terence Steele. You lower your head and hit him with the bullrush.”"

Smith has been playing well and is clearly the favorite to win the left guard spot. But he’s a natural tackle and that’s where Dallas sees him playing down the road. Perhaps Broaddus is right and they should give him a shot to unseat Steele.

That would leave them with Connor McGovern at left guard but it would also give them a more dependable swing tackle in Steele — and based on recent history, they will need someone in that role they can depend on.
