It’s been two full months since we have heard any update on the status of Dallas Cowboys cornerback Kelvin Joseph in relation to a murder that happened back in March. As of Sunday, Dallas County officials have cleared Joseph’s name from the investigation and he will receive no criminal charges for his presence at the drive-by shooting that resulted in the death of 20-year-old Cameron Ray.

Mickey Spagnola, a writer for the team’s official site, was the first to report the update. Here is the exact quote:

"“There has been a lot of speculation over his availability after being a passenger in a car from where a fatal drive-by shooting took place late March in Dallas. But from what I’ve learned, Joseph, who was not involved in the shooting, has been cleared by Dallas County officials, being truthful and forthcoming during the investigation, and remember he never was arrested or charged with anything. Now as for the NFL, that is a different matter, and its movement is at glacier speeds when coming to incidents such as this. The Cowboys have stood firm on the issue that the 22-year-old is good to go from a legal standpoint.’’"

Police initially interviewed the Cowboys CB because he was seen in a video where a group Joseph was with was involved in an altercation with Ray. After the situation, an SUV drove by Ray and his friends, and gunshots were fired from the vehicle.

Cowboys CB Kelvin Joseph has been cleared of criminal charges in relation to a murder investigation, but may still face league discipline

Although Dallas police have cleared Joseph, it is possible that the NFL can still fine or suspend him because he is subject to the league’s personal conduct policy. On Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he had not received an update from the NFL as to whether any further discipline will be taken despite being cleared of criminal wrongdoing. According to Yahoo Sports, the league is “still monitoring Joseph’s legal cooperation with the Dallas police department.”

After Spagnola reported that Joseph was cleared, the 22-year-old sent out a tweet showing his gratitude. The second-year corner arrived in Oxnard on Monday and is expected to be fully available for all training camp activities with the first practice set to begin Wednesday.

With legal issues behind him, Joseph can now focus on earning himself a spot next to Trevon Diggs. It’s his battle to lose against additional cornerback Anthony Brown. Joseph was a former second-round pick in last year’s NFL Draft. It’s time for him to prove he was worth a high-value pick.
