Dallas Cowboys: Despite thrilling Week 2 win, there is an area of concern
Boy oh boy, does victory taste sweet, eh? The Dallas Cowboys played one heck of a football game in Week 2 and earned their first win of the season. It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win regardless and well, it helps set the tone from here on out.
It was a great sight to see the Cowboys play an all-around solid game of football with the exception of one area. Yes, their offense was buzzing with a potent and balanced attack that featured a nice commitment to the run and the ability to unleash quarterback Dak Prescott to do what he does best through the air.
The Cowboys’ defense played well and honestly, with two nice takeaways via interception, they brought the heat against quarterback Justin Herbert. Even kicker Greg Zuerlein redeemed himself by hitting a game-winning field goal in such a clutch way, it made many Cowboys fans forget about his blunders in Week 1.
All in all, the stock of the Cowboys undoubtedly rose as now, they take their talents to Monday Night Football in Week 3 with their first home game of the season against their NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Dallas Cowboys need to tighten up on reckless penalties
At this point in time, the Cowboys look like they can definitely be a playoff contender and who knows, could very well run away with the NFC East if everything falls into place. They aren’t perfect but one glaring area of concern that has reared its ugly head this early in the season is the reckless penalties committed by the team.
In the grand scheme of things, they need to tighten up when it comes to giving away yards by committing penalties. To be fair, the Cowboys won 20-17 over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2 but it really could have gone either way. It came down to that last-second field goal to secure victory but had they lost that game, one can easily see the unnecessary penalties would be a big reason why.
This all comes down to coaching and getting all their players to buckle down and play smart, disciplined, situational football. As a team, the Cowboys committed 8 penalties for 76 yards in Week and that can’t happen anymore if they are indeed to push the envelope this season to a playoff berth.
The Cowboys can’t continue to let penalties define them and potentially have them lose these very important, close football games. Every game counts in the NFL and playing sloppy football is a recipe to being a consistently losing football team. Perhaps the Cowboys got lucky this time around but luck runs out quickly in the NFL if you’re playing undisciplined football and practically giving the game away due to careless penalties.
