The Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback job has hit an interesting snag and the latest news could complicate things further.

The Denver Broncos have named Tedd Bridgewater as their starting quarterback. My initial reaction was that the team should have drafted quarterback Justin Fileds instead which would have netted the Dallas Cowboys cornerback Partick Surtain II.

Surtain has as much hype surrounding him as the Dallas Cowboys have with linebacker Micah Parsons so this debate could be a wash. There are some who are still mad at the Broncos for taking Surtain away from the Dallas Cowboys.

For those of you who are still upset over the Broncos taking Surtain, I wonder if the Broncos could make amends?

I have found it common for teams replacing a young starting incumbent to move them away from their roster. Now, former Denver Broncos starting quarterback Drew Lock is the backup and any hard feelings could divide the locker room.

If Denver makes Lock available, I am first in line to see what the price of acquiring him would be. I thought Lock was going to be someone in this league when he was first drafted. I was shocked when he fell to the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Lock has shown flashes but is obviously lacking in other departments such as consistency. It might have to do with the lack of guidance and experience Lock has gotten from his own quarterback room.

Dak Prescott had Tony Romo in the room to help him his rookie season. Lock hasn’t been as lucky.

If the Dallas Cowboys could acquire Drew Lock, the dynamic of the backup quarterback room changes. Lock instantly becomes the backup while the Dallas Cowboys now have to decide between Cooper Rush and Garrett Gilbert.

Ben DiNucci is clearly destined for the practice squad.

Lock is clearly more physically gifted than what the Dallas Cowboys have on their current roster. That is not a shot as Lock has some very intriguing tools. The Cowboys would be forced to keep a third quarterback until Lock gets up to speed on the playbook.

Drew Lock is entering his third year and is on a second-round contract. His salary-cap number this season is around $1.9 million while next year’s cap number jumps up to roughly $2.2 million. Lock does not have any guaranteed money left on his deal and is taking up only 1% of the Denver Broncos salary cap space.

Lock had his completion percentage drop from his rookie year and although he did throw 15 touchdowns last season, he threw 16 interceptions. Not a good selling point but that could be used against Denver in trade negotiations.

I would be interested in Lock and would even consider sending a third-round pick for him although I would be more comfortable with a fourth. That is if Denver even wants to deal him. There were some very interesting trade rumors revolving around Lock and Carson Wentz.

Just like pitchers in baseball, I would try and acquire a quarterback in almost every draft. If they become available in free agency or through trades, it makes just as much sense to me.

Lock himself is an ultra-sure athlete who has a cannon of a right arm. Knowing that he is coming into a situation to learn rather than play could be exactly what he needs. I know we get excited every time a hint someone can become available but this is one that makes sense.

The Dallas Cowboys are two weeks away from the season opener and I still couldn’t tell you who the backup quarterback currently is. I would not mind if it got complicated with Drew lock in the quarterback room.
