The Cowboys’ linebacker corps has been upgraded this offseason with the addition of three fresh faces. New defensive coordinator Dan Quinn brought over safety Keanu Neal from his previous team, the Atlanta Falcons, and promptly moved him to linebacker.

Then the Cowboys used their first-round selection to acquire Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons 12th overall. Finally, Dallas used their first pick on Day Three of the draft to select LSU linebacker Jabril Cox in the fourth round.

While the Cowboys did lose veterans Sean Lee to retirement and Joe Thomas to free agency, the new additions to the positional group, which already included former Pro Bowlers in Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith, has left the depth chart bloated with talent.

So where does someone like third-year linebacker Luke Gifford fit in? He’s currently battling other linebacker candidates like Azur Kamara, Anthony Hines III, and Francis Bernard for a spot on the roster that might not even be there depending upon how much depth the team decides to keep.

By all accounts, Gifford is having a solid training camp and flashed as a defensive stalwart for the Dallas defense in their preseason matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers recording four solo tackles, which tied for the most on the team.

This could simply be the case where there isn’t enough room on the roster for Luke Gifford, which would be a shame for an ascending player entering his third season with the club.
