James Washington’s scoop and score

The Dallas Cowboys of the early 1990s really had a defensive team filled with role players that more than likely could have started on most other teams. Safety James Washington played alongside Darren Woodson, Bill Bates, and Thomas Everett to name a few.

The depth this team had was insane so getting an opportunity to make a big play when playing time was scarce is an opportunity Washington didn’t waste.

The Dallas Cowboys trailed at halftime in Super Bowl XXVIII so it was no surprise when defensive tackle Leon Lett stripped Bills running back Thurman Thomas three plays into the second half which Buffalo led 13-6. Washington would then scoop up the fumble and take it 46 yards to the house and the Dallas Cowboys never trailed again.

At the half, I remember thinking about the ramifications of the Dallas Cowboys losing the game. After the game, I also thought to myself that James Washington should have won MVP honors. Emmitt Smith eventually did but Washington provided the spark that lifted this team to immortality.

Up until that point, the Buffalo Bills were enjoying the momentum and Dallas Cowboy hopefuls were getting frustrated. The scoop and score gave life to these Dallas Cowboys and was the moment all of the momenta shifted and allowed the floodgates to open.

Down 13-6 at halftime, the Dallas Cowboys went on to win 30-13 shutting out the Buffalo Bills from the Super Bowl to which they have never been back to since. Who would have thought that James Washington would shut the Super Bowl window for the Buffalo Bills but that is exactly what happened.
