Robert Newhouse halfback pass

The eighth spot belongs to Robert Newhouse and his infamous halfback pass. Super Bowl trick plays are rarely successful or even used for that matter which makes the Newhouse pass the poster child for big game tricks.

The Dallas defense was dominant and the Dallas Cowboys were comfortably up when the usually buttoned-up Tom Landry called Robert’s number. The Dallas Cowboys back was surprised Landry called the play.

Gil Brandt was also surprised at the play call recalling that they never got the play right once in practice so calling it in the game was almost shocking.

Newhouse took the pitch and threw a 29-yard strike to wide receiver Golden Richards essentially ending any Denver comeback. The Dallas Defense had been suffocating the Denver offense up to that point so any added points felt like an insurmountable lead to overcome.

The most impressive feat about this play was the fact that Newhouse ran to his left and had to turn his body and throw against the grain as he was right-handed. For a play that couldn’t be completed in practice to a Super Bowl memory has to make everyone involved smile.

Winning the Super Bowl is fantastic but coming away with a memorable play that you live with for a lifetime is just as impactful. I still remember running around the yard pretending I was Emmitt Smith or Roger Staubach.
