Donovan Wilson is clearly the future of the safety position in Dallas. That was made even more evident by his eight-tackle, two-pass deflection, one-interception performance against the 49ers on Sunday, chipping in towards the whopping four defensive turnovers that helped win the game.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that fellow starting safety Xavier Woods isn’t part of the team’s future. But the fact Wilson is playing so well may actually make Woods more expendable as a pending free agent this March.

The new coaching staff in Dallas could look to finally upgrade the safety position in Dallas. That after the previous regime spent two sixth-rounders to retain the likes of both Wilson and Woods.

In fact, first-year head coach Mike McCarthy did attempt to add his own guy to the safety mix this offseason when the team signed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix as a free agent. McCarthy drafted Clinton-Dix out of Alabama back in 2014 when he was at the helm of the Green Bay Packers.

Unfortunately, the Cowboys’ new staff didn’t like what they saw from the veteran safety and opted to move on from Ha Ha before the start of the regular season.

It seems plausible the new crew in Dallas will once again attempt to upgrade from Xavier Woods, whose play has regressed this season. The fact it appears Dallas has hit on Donovan Wilson only makes the moving on from Woods easier.
