The surprising top five Cowboys players outside the top five
By Connor Green
Which Dallas Cowboys round out the best on the team as it currently stands?
Recently, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones claimed that running back Ezekiel Elliott was the teams’ best football player. The three-time Super Bowl-winning owner made this claim during a radio interview on 105.3 The Fan in November.
In the aftermath of that claim, I wrote an article laying out the not-so definitive list of the five best healthy players currently on the Cowboys’ roster. The list kicked off with the teams’ talented young wide receiver CeeDee Lamb at number five and ended with the now-injured All-Pro guard Zack Martin at number one.
During the compilation of the list, which can be found here, it became increasingly difficult to decide which players deserved a spot on the list and which should be left off. A little over a week after the list was published I still feel fairly confident in the rankings (outside of the fact that Zack Martin would no longer qualify due to his calf injury).
However, the organization has several talented players who did not make the list who deserved to be praised for their efforts on the field this season. Without further ado, here is the absolutely flawless (please do not take me seriously) list of the next five best players currently on America’s Team.
10. Tony Pollard, Running Back
The Dallas Cowboys have uncharacteristically struggled to establish the run thus far this season. That is in large part due to the fact that the offensive line has been riddled with injuries (Some say it has “cracked“). However, the Cowboy’s backup running back Tony Pollard has shown real promise in his second season in the league.
The 23-year old is currently posting an impressive five yards per rush and has provided a nice change of pace from the teams’ starting running back Ezekiel Elliott. The young runner demonstrated his abilities in the teams’ win over the Minnesota Vikings earlier this year when he broke off for an impressive 42-yard rushing touchdown.
Pollard finished that matchup with a season-high 60 rushing yards on only five attempts. The second-year back is widely seen as a better pass catcher than starting running back Ezekiel Elliott and his play so far this year should warrant him more playing time moving forward.
In his rookie season, playing behind three-time Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott, he finished the year with 455 rushing yards while averaging 5.3 yards per rush. Pollard has also done a stellar job taking care of the football this year. He has yet to fumble to the ball so far this season and only has one fumble in his entire career thus far.
The Dallas Cowboys would be wise to give their young running back more touches moving forward. Tony Pollard has demonstrated an ability to burst up the field while avoiding costly mistakes. The young running back has proven his worth this season and should be a player to watch in the coming years.
