Ronald Leary, Offensive Guard

Week Three’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks saw the great reshuffling of the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line. In desperation mode due to massive injuries suffered by this unit, the team opted to shift All-World right guard Zack Martin to right tackle.

They then placed longtime backup center Joe Looney at right guard. And fourth-round rookie Tyler Biadasz at center. And while this shift seemed to work early on, the entire O-Line failed to hold up during the final and most important drive of the ballgame. And that allowed pressure lead to quarterback Dak Prescott throwing a game-ending interception in Seattle.

Entering Week Four’s matchup against the up-and-coming Cleveland Browns, the Cowboys are hoping to have All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith back. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely the team will get starting right tackle La’el Collins back anytime soon.

If Smith is able to return, it gives the Cowboys more options. Potentially playing Brandon Knight at right tackle being one. But the bigger concern is the situation surrounding the two Connors.

Connor Williams seems to have regressed to a new low in Dallas. The 2018 second-rounder has started all three games at left guard but has earned a career-low 55.0 overall grade from Pro Football Focus doing so.

The other Connor, Connor McGovern, is all but forgotten. The 2019 third-rounder, whom the Cowboys had a second-round grade on, has played just 11 total snaps so far this season. All of them on special teams.

Regardless of what’s happening (or not happening) at tackle, the left guard position is the real issue in Dallas. And that’s why when news broke last week that the Cowboys had brought in former starter Ronald Leary for a workout, the move made so much sense.

Leary could theoretically come in right away and give the Cowboys a much-needed boost from a veteran who’s worked within this line before. Unfortunately, despite the workout and COVID-19 testing for a couple of days, the team and the player failed to come to an agreement as the deal reportedly fell through. This is one deal the team should seriously revisit this week.
