4 free agents the Dallas Cowboys should call right now
Delanie Walker, Tight End
The Cowboys entered the 2020 regular season with a very strong offense. The two areas that could be questioned are the offensive line depth and tight end. The Cowboys allowed future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten to leave in free agency this offseason, granting the starting position to Blake Jarwin.
Unfortunately, it appears Jarwin may be lost for the season after suffering an apparent ACL injury against the Rams on Sunday night. The depth at the position was suspect prior to the start of the season. And if Jarwin is indeed lost, the Cowboys have a serious problem.
Dalton Schultz, Blake Bell, and undrafted rookie Sean McKeon currently occupy the active roster at tight end. Dallas also has tight end Cole Hikutini on the practice squad which they could call up. But if Sunday night’s performance is any indication of what we can expect from this group, Jerry Jones needs to get on the horn now to try and find some outside help.
The tight end market is bare. Outside of making a trade to address the position, it’s quite possible that Delanie Walker is the Cowboys’ best bet in free agency.
The upside to Walker is he’s an experienced veteran with 100 NFL starts under his belt. And during his last six years with the Tennessee Titans, he was targeted over 100 times in four-straight seasons.
The downside to Walker is the fact he just turned 36-years old. And he’s struggled with injuries over the past two seasons that have limited him to a grand total of eight games. Despite that, several NFL teams are rumored to be interested in signing Walker. Perhaps the Cowboys should be added to that list.
