The return of Doomsday

Throwing out their fourth and fifth seasons in franchise history, the Dallas Cowboys have made the playoffs every year they have had a top-five scoring defense. If the Cowboys get that type of defensive production in 2020, this will be a magical season.

The good news is that the components are there for this to happen. DeMarcus Lawrence, now joined by last week’s signing of Everson Griffen gives the Cowboys potent book ends in which to rush the opposing quarterback. If they are able to get anything close to what he used to do for San Francisco from Aldon Smith, the rest of the league will be put on notice.

With Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch at linebacker, the Dallas Cowboys boast one of the top two or three duos in all of football. Smith is getting closer and closer to the version of himself Dallas thought they would get when they stole him with the 34th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. Vander Esch, meanwhile, looks to return to form after losing most of last year due to injury.

When these two are flying around, making plays, the defense just looks different. Regardless, the 2020 defense will look different in the secondary with two rookie cornerbacks and a veteran safety patrolling the back end. As long as that group holds up, it is entirely conceivable that Dallas possesses one of the best scoring defenses in 2020 which will be necessary for February football.
