Dallas Cowboys: 6 final roster cuts that might shock you
Jamize Olawale, FB
Mike McCarthy has a history of using fullbacks while head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Most notably, John Kuhn. That bodes well for the position in Dallas.
Jamize Olawale has manned the Cowboys’ fullback position for the past two years. And with experience trumping potential during a stunted offseason, the veteran would appear to have a leg up on the competition.
And said competition comes in the form of undrafted free agent Sewo Olonilua out of TCU. But where the rookie may have the edge is in price and production.
Set to make a cap hit of $1.75 million in 2020 per spotrac.com, Olawale has had little offensive production during his time in Dallas, racking up two receptions for 13 yards and no rushing attempts in two years. And remember, the Cowboys had the top offense in the NFL last season in total yards. Olawale was only targeted twice in 2019 and didn’t record a catch or carry.
The more versatile Olonilua rushed for 537 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 4.0 yards per carry for the Horned Frogs last season. He also had 24 receptions for 114 yards and another score. This one could simply be a choice of going with a much cheaper, younger option who could play at running back if needed as well.
