Drafted in the fourth round of the 2018 draft just as future Hall of Famer Jason Witten was retiring to join the ESPN Monday Night Football booth as an analyst, Dalton Schultz was put in a position to succeed in Dallas.

Yet, entering his third season, Schultz is clearly near the bottom of the depth chart with Blake Jarwin set to start for the foreseeable future and the team signing free-agent tight end Blake Bell in the offseason.

As a rookie, Schultz was a seven-game starter. He recorded 12 receptions for 116 yards off of 17 targets. Last season, following the return of Witten, the former fourth-rounder didn’t start a single game and recorded one catch for six yards off two targets.

With Jarwin and Bell presumably ahead of Schultz on the depth chart, there could be a training camp battle for a place on the final roster between Dalton, Cole Hikutini, Sean McKeon, and Charlie Taumoepeau. And if the Cowboys decide to move on from Schultz just two years into his career, that would be a bit of a surprise.
