CB, Anthony Brown

The top-paid cornerback in Dallas is Anthony Brown. He enjoyed early success with the team from 2016 to 2018, but someone swooped in this past season while Brown battled injuries.

Jourdan Lewis took over as the slot corner and played quite well. That is something that is not good for Brown. The Cowboys still have faith and believe in Brown’s potential regardless of Lewis’ production.

I mean, he was just signed to a new contract this season. One that places him 31st among cornerbacks for average annual value.

After being limited to only nine games in 2019, and seeing Lewis’ emergence, Brown could have used the preseason to remind the Cowboys of his skill. His role as a good coverage corner that likes to put his hands on the ball should fit well in defensive coordinator Mike Nolan’s scheme.

The tackling advantage that Lewis has over Brown may be what causes an issue. What is being aggressive if you can’t make a tackle? You would need to hope Brown could get his hands on the ball as much as possible.

You can split the two corners’ snaps by what you predict the offense is going to do. Play Brown against passing plays and play Lewis against running plays. If that’s the case, where does Worley fit into the picture?

With that logic, you can also matchup Brown up against Worley, as both are coverage corners that get their hands on the ball, yet miss tackles. Brown held quarterbacks to a lower passer rating, yet Worley held quarterbacks to a lower completion percentage.

If the two preseason games don’t get canceled, I would expect Nolan to focus in on the cornerback battle. If they are, then the first four weeks will tell the story of how things will go. I’m sure that owner Jerry Jones would want to make sure he didn’t waste his money.
