Tavon Austin, Wide Receiver

Coming out of West Virginia as the ultimate gadget player, Tavon Austin was the eighth overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. Seven years later and Austin has been regulated to being an afterthought in the Cowboys offense as the team’s fourth wide receiver and primary punt returner.

When Dallas originally traded for Austin, sending a sixth-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Rams during the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cowboys thought they were getting a dynamic playmaker who could replace Lucky Whitehead as the team’s new gadget player. There was even some early thoughts about Austin playing as a web back.

Yet, Austin never lived up to his billing with the Cowboys, which is the same issue he had as a member of the Rams for his first five years in the league. Last season, Dallas paid him $3 million according to OverTheCap.com. Austin would record just eight receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns as injuries limited him to seven games.

A free agent this offseason, the Cowboys re-signed Austin to a one-year deal with a salary-cap hit of $1.32 million. Through 10 games so far, he’s posted 10 catches off of 17 targets for 112 yards. Austin also has one rushing touchdown.

With wide receiver Cole Beasley signing with the Buffalo Bills as a free agent this offseason, Tavon Austin figured to give the Dallas Cowboys some juice as a punt returner. Yet, Austin has returned just 12 punts in 10 games, averaging 4.8 yards per return with his longest going for only 15 yards.
