Trysten Hill, Defensive Tackle

Although Trysten Hill may deserve to get a pink slip in 2020, his draft status and youth (21-years old) will save him from it just like it did former first-round defensive end Taco Charlton.

The Cowboys’ top pick in 2017, Charlton stuck around the Cowboys for three seasons before Dallas finally wised up and waived the developmental project earlier this year. Taco was claimed by the tanking Miami Dolphins and managed to rack up 4.0 sacks in his first five games. But he hasn’t posted any sacks since Week Nine.

Hill, the Cowboys second-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft out of UCF, was a Rod Marinelli selection all the way. A perfect three-technique defensive tackle fit for the defensive coordinator’s scheme, Dallas opted to draft Hill over three highly-ranked safeties in Delaware’s Nasir Adderley, Washington’s Taylor Rapp, and Virginia’s Juan Thornhill.

Yet, as profiled by NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein, there were major concerns about Hill’s football character and maturity coming out of college. Those concerns were validated when reports emerged that the second-rounder was late to a meeting and fell asleep during a speech by NBA Hall of Famer Isaiah Thomas (and got called out for it).

And remember, those are just the incidents that the media found out about. It is anyone’s guess what other incidents may have happened behind closed doors.

More importantly (and worrisome) is the fact Hill has played in only five games so far this season. The Cowboys top 2019 selection has been a healthy scratch in a whopping seven contests. And Hill has recorded a total of three tackles and no sacks in those limited 85 defensive snaps. He already appears to be a complete bust as Taco Charlton 2.0.
