Chidobe Awuzie, Cornerback

The second-rounder is starting to emerge as the Cowboys’ weak link in the secondary. With Byron Jones playing at a Pro Bowl-level opposite of him, Chidobe Awuzie will continue to be the main target for opposing offenses. And the third-year defensive back has struggled to step up to the challenge.

After a shortened, but promising rookie season, Awuzie seems to have regressed this season rather than living up to his second-round potential. So far this year he’s posted 47 tackles, seven pass defends, and one interception through nine games.

Against the Vikings Sunday night, Awuzie gave up a critical two-point conversion to Vikings’ tight end Kyle Rudolph. Chido was also in coverage on a third-down conversion by wide receiver Stephon Diggs that ultimately led to a field goal at the end of the first half, giving the Vikings a 17-14 halftime lead.

Against the New York Giants in Week Nine, it was Awuzie who gave up the only touchdown to the G-Men as he was caught wildly out of position on a short pass from rookie quarterback Daniel Jones to wideout Cody Latimer.

Perhaps the Cowboys would be better off starting backups Anthony Brown or Jourdan Lewis in Awuzie’s place. But knowing this stubborn coaching staff, they’ll likely ride with the status quo until the wheels come off.
