Who is the most realistic yet best option?

Dallas is in a very precarious position when it comes to their quarterback room. Prescott is obviously the guy. Will he get an extension this year or will the Cowboys try to make him play one more year on the cheap?

Dak could theoretically hold out to force the Cowboys hand. If he chose to do so, he could really stick it to Dallas by waiting to announce his hold out until free agency and the draft are complete.

It’s highly unlikely, either way, that Dallas would use a draft pick on a quarterback but bringing in a veteran would be necessary depending upon how long Prescott would choose to sit.

There’s also the question of injury. What if Dak gets hurt? This team fancies itself as a playoff participant with Super Bowl aspirations. Rolling with Rush or White would all but kill those dreams.

Looking at the landscape of the free agent market, Foles and Bridgewater will be looking for starting gigs next year which eliminates them from the discussion. Sanchez, once Prescott’s backup would be intriguing but unlikely.

That leaves Fitzpatrick, McCown and Taylor.

Of the three, if the Cowboys were to sign a veteran, I think Taylor would be the best option.

Aside from one year (2017), McCown has not been that great. His 98 career touchdowns and 82 career interceptions are an automatic no for me. Fitzpatrick’s 190 and 148 are also not appealing.

Taylor, however, is what some might call a less dynamic Dak Prescott.

He’s much younger than both McCown and Fitzpatrick. He takes care of the ball (53 touchdowns, only 20 interceptions) and he’s mobile (three years with 425+ rushing yards, 16 career rushing touchdowns).

So, will the Cowboys actually sign a veteran quarterback in free agency to back up Prescott? I’ll tell you my answer on the following page …
