With just one proven quarterback on the roster, will the Dallas Cowboys use free agency to sign a veteran backup or continue to roll the dice?

For the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL, there is no “off” season. Oh, sure, the Cowboys won’t play another game that matters for seven months or so, but there is plenty of work to do from now until then.

The first order of business pertains to the decision on whether or not to use the franchise tag. Last week I detailed this option. Let’s file this under “break in case of emergency” and move forward. After that, is the NFL Draft Scouting Combine.

I’m not saying that there is not some usefulness to this, because there can definitely be some necessary aspects involved. What I will say is there are a lot of “workout warriors” who don’t actually work out when it comes time to produce on the field.

Of course, there is also the poster boy for not putting a ton of stock into a weekend in a t-shirt and shorts. Next up is free agency which is what I will be focusing on over the next several weeks. Today’s first installment will have us look into the most high-profile position on the field. The quarterback.

The depth chart

Dak Prescott – signed through 2019
Cooper Rush – signed through 2019
Mike White – signed through 2021

2019 notable free agent quarterbacks

Ryan Fitzpatrick
Nick Foles
Josh McCown
Tyrod Taylor
Teddy Bridgewater
Mark Sanchez

On the following page I’ll reveal my choice for the most realistic yet best free agent option for the Cowboys’ backup quarterback position …
