#3. Did Leighton Vander Esch just Wally Pipp Sean Lee?

The first round rookie linebacker put on a show Sunday night. Not only did Vander Esch led the team with 13 solo tackles, but he also recorded his first career interception and made a game-saving tackle for a loss late in the fourth quarter.

Rated as one of the top performing linebackers in the NFL this season, has Vander Esch done enough to earn the starting role over two-time Pro Bowl veteran Sean Lee? Did the rookie just Wally Pipp (winning someone’s job due to injury) the Cowboys longtime defensive general?

Fortunately for Lee, we don’t have to answer that question right now. The 32-year old linebacker is expected to miss the next three to five weeks with a hamstring injury. So Vander Esch has that amount of time to either prove he’s worthy of starting over a healthy Lee or he shows he still needs more time to develop.

Regardless, when Sean Lee does make his return, Leighton Vander Esch has proven himself worthy of more playing time. And the trio of Jaylon Smith, Lee and Vander Esch are arguably already the league’s top linebacker corps.
