Jason Witten time is up

So, apparently old man Jason should retire. I don’t think so.

The tight-end, who turns 36 in May, still has the legs. For the field and his commercials. Witten brings a high-level of leadership for the Cowboys. His experience and voice is valuable. And, lending the keys to a young gun too soon, say Rico Gathers, would be detrimental.

Witten’s 63 catches puts him seventh among all tight ends in 2017. For perspective, Travis Kelce led the way with 83 catches, followed by Jack Doyle with 80 balls.

Witten had five receiving touchdowns, and once again, started all 16 games. Only Jimmy Graham had double-digit touchdowns.

Finally, the old man had 560 yards receiving, which placed him 12th overall in his position. Not bad for a 35-year-old. Eh?

Dez Bryant lost the stars

This is a tough one. Personally, I love everything the 88 jersey stands for. Unfortunately, I don’t think Dez Bryant deserves a roster spot, even with a pay cut. My statement falls in line with a lot of folks among the Cowboys’ community.

But here is where we differ. Yes, Bryant lost a step. It’s also true that his route running is suspect. Having said all that, I still think Bryant has the elite tools and potential to extend his career. It just can’t happen in Dallas.

Even at 29, I still feel Bryant can ball and add fuel to the fire in a positive way for some other organization. No, we can’t justify his contract in Big D. But, Bryant has shown flashes of his ability.

He just needs a change of scenery, some coaching, and overall, a different chemistry set in a new town.

Get Jon Gruden

I’m a little jealous over the whole Jon Gruden back to Raiders thing. I have no doubt that the Raiders fan base will be re-energized over this signing. I expect a great change in tide in the AFC West, and it’ll be fun to watch.

On the other hand, the Cowboys are stuck in the coaching department. Sure, there’s been some changes. But Garrett is back, which means Big D isn’t out to grab a big name in the coaching ranks. Another year with the clapper and his .553 winning percentage.
