Defensive Backs

This draft is full of talented defensive backs who could make an immediate difference on the field. For the Cowboys it seems as if they are looking to take a defensive back in the second, third and/or fourth round. The Cowboys should look to reload their defensive backfield during this draft and the second round is a great place to do that.

First Round

Marlon Humphrey (Alabama)/Tre’Davious White (LSU)/Adoree Jackson (USC)/Kevin King (Washington)/Chidobe Awuzie (Colorado)

If the Cowboys are going to take a cornerback in the first round it will likely be Marlon Humphrey. He is the most talented defensive back who could fall to Dallas and could be there at 28.

Most likely he will be gone and if that is the case Dallas will look to draft a pass rusher especially if Harris or one of their top targets are on the board. This means the Cowboys are likely to invest in a cornerback with their second round pick and to be honest any of the names on this list for the exception of Humphrey could be there on day 2.

In terms of who they select will likely depend on how the draft falls but the team is unlikely to draft pass rushers back to back. White would be a solid option, if the Cowboys have a short memory.

They recently saw their biggest draft bust (who just so happened to be from LSU) leave the team in free agency so them taking a chance on another similar player is slim. Jackson has a leg up because he is versatile and has a proven history when it comes to covering wide receivers even if he has gotten beat.

King is one of the taller more sought after cornerbacks and could be gone by the end of the first round. His size and playmaking ability makes him a distant option at 28. He had the best broad jump at the combine but failed to record more than three interceptions in college.

Round 2

Quincy Wilson (Florida)/Fabian Moreau (UCLA)/Jourdan Lewis (Michigan)/Jalen “Teez” Tabor (Florida)/Cordrea Tankersley (Clemson)/Obi Melifonwu (UConn/Safety)

These are players who are pretty much guaranteed to be available on day 2. The Florida corners are my favorite of the bunch. Even with Tabor’s off the field issues (fighting with teammates) he still remains one of the most talented players on day 2.

You can even argued he could be an immediate upgrade over the corners the Cowboys lost in free agency. That is the case for just about anyone on this list and as long as Dallas drafts a defensive back on the second day they should be able to come away with a quality player/starter.

Melifonwu is an interesting choice because of his ties to starting free safety Byron Jones but he should be gone before the Cowboys are on the clock. Lewis is one of the best cover corners in the draft however the second round may be a bit rich for him. If there is a run on cornerbacks late in the first/during the second round, he could have tremendous value for the Cowboys.

Round 3

Jalen Myrick (Minnesota)/Justin Evans (Texas A&M/Safety)/Shaquill Griffin (UCF)

This is where the Cowboys will either find a new wide receiver or safety. If cornerbacks fall in this draft it is possible that the Cowboys go back to back at the position. Myrick will be one of the best corners.
