Dallas Cowboys re-signing Kellen Moore gives them options
The Dallas Cowboys have re-signed veteran quarterback Kellen Moore to a one-year deal. Here’s why that’s ultimately a good thing for the Cowboys.
If they did it once, they can do it again. It’s a philosophy we’ve heard associated with the Dallas Cowboys‘ coaching staff before. And quarterback Kellen Moore once threw for over 400 yards and three touchdowns during a regular season contest for Dallas. But that’s likely not the reason the Cowboys opted to re-sign the veteran free agent backup on Monday.
The former Boise State star has reportedly signed a one-year deal worth $775,000 to remain in Dallas another season. Although according the ESPN’s Todd Archer, Moore’s salary will only count $615,000 against the Cowboys’ salary cap this year.
If Dallas does decide to indeed move on from former starter Tony Romo this offseason, Moore is currently set to become the primary back-up quarterback for second-year phenom Dak Prescott. The 27-year old was basically an extra coach on the sidelines last year after he suffered a season-ending ankle injury that open the door for young Dak to take over in Dallas.
By signing Moore, the Cowboys secure an inexpensive veteran to help their relatively inexperienced starter as another set of eyes on the field and an extra ear to bend on the bench. And in a pinch, the diminutive quarterback (6-0, 200 pounds) has proven to be effective on the field as well.

Importantly, this signing also doesn’t hinder any future moves the Cowboys’ front office may opt to make, such as signing another quarterback via free agency and/or selecting one in the upcoming NFL Draft. Basically, re-signing Moore in Dallas simply gives the Cowboys a ton of options at the position moving forward.
